Getting to Oaxaca

There is one small international airport in Oaxaca: Oaxaca Xoxocotlan International Airport (OAX).

Most flights from the US require a connection in Mexico City (a 1-1.5 hour flight from CDMX to OAX); however, there are direct flights from Dallas, Houston, and LA. If you are connecting in Mexico City, please ensure you allow enough time for your layover to go through customs.

With limited flights going in and out of OAX daily, we recommend that you book airfare as soon as you know your travel plans.

The easiest way to get into Oaxaca City from the airport is to take the airport taxi/shuttle service (via the taxi stand near the exit doors). We do not recommend renting a car as parking is nearly impossible in the city center.

If you prefer private transfer from the airport, see options below.

transportation in Oaxaca

If you are staying in 'el Centro' (downtown), most of the attractions are within walking distance and no transportation is needed. There are plenty of taxis available throughout the city. Ubers are not available in Oaxaca.

If you want to venture outside of el Centro (see more on the 'Things To Do' page), most excursions offer transportation, or you can book your own cab or private transfer. Be sure to bring pesos for any transportation since some operators do not accept credit cards. We recommend ordering pesos from your bank before the trip or withdrawing pesos at the airport ATM.
